Artist statement
With an instantly recognizable style that emphasizes natural light and compassion for the beautiful spaces and subjects she captures, Jena Hovey has become one of Mid-Michigan’s most respected photographers.
Jena’s adventurous spirit and love for weather phenomena have led to a passion for storm chasing. She has had the opportunity to document Tornado Alley with chasers from the National Weather Service on several occasions. The Weather Channel has featured several of her storm images over the years.
Aside from storms, Jena’s work has appeared across the country in publications like National Rock Review and Loud Hailer Magazine, where she is currently serving as a contributing photographer. These roles have given Jena the opportunity to photograph some of rock’s greatest legends, including Rush, Peter Gabriel, Alice Cooper, Tool, Smashing Pumpkins, Primus, and Motörhead. Most recently, her images were featured in an award-winning documentary film called Camp RicStar.
Restaurants often seek out Jena for her talent for capturing unique perspectives that help their establishment and food stand out from the crowd. You may even find her work hanging on the walls of some of the area’s most popular establishments.
One of the most frequent compliments Jena receives from clients is for her ability to capture the emotion and true spirit of her subject. Those compliments can be seen in her recognition by the Lansing City Pulse as a “Top of the Town” photographer on 11 separate occasions.
Whether the focal point is a rock concert, cocktail, person, family, a local business, a storm or a field of golden wheat, Jena’s passion always expresses itself through her work.
